It’s About Time! Wednesday, Oct 7 2009

Alright, so this idea of mine to blog about life in a call center has been stewing at the surface of my head for the past few weeks and I’m not sure why, but I really do feel compelled to create this little slice of cyberspace for my thoughts in the workplace.

First thing you need to know is that I’m talkin’ ’bout the call center life in the Philippines, in the heart of Manila. Second, this is my first “proper” job that I entered into, for the sake of work experience. Third- a disclaimer: all the events that have happened (or happening) are true, with itsy-bitsy details edited and names changed, for the privacy of the company and the people I’m with.

Before anything else, let me give you a little idea of moi.

I am (apparently) the youngest agent ever in Operations (at least as far as I know since everyone’s pretty comfortable disclosing their age, which is refreshing). Before I entered the company, I absolutely had zero idea of what it means to be an agent, much less knowledge of technical hoo-hahs and whatchamacallits. I’m still under probationary. Fate has tweaked a few paths for me to actually earn the title of “technical support representative” which I never dreamed in a bazillion years I’d ever be (probably the last job I’d ever opt for). And I don’t have any long-term plans in the company. As I’ve mentioned. I’ve entered this call center life for the sake of experience.  (And one of the OIC- or officer-in-charge- jokingly said “what sort of experience?” *nudge, nudge. wink, wink*)

My brain is still fresh from watching the movie remake of “Fame”  and I still have another day off tomorrow.

In case you’re wondering, our office has been affected by typhoon Ondoy. Not much damage. But for two weeks now, we have no elevator and we have to use the friggin’ stairs to god knows how many flights of stairs to the 4th floor. Not exactly the most thrilling workout, but at least it’s the only form of exercise we get before our shift starts. And I guess The Company knows how some employees are affected by this calamity and they’ve taken to making sure that for the month of October we can dress down. Oh, and we get to have relief goods too. Pancit canton, anyone?

xoxo
